Had a chance to visit a small, local residential Amman Temple in Konnur this morning.  People were extremely friendly and as usually asked that I take their photograph – what an honor

The Gold Star is the location of the temple, see below.  The physical temple may be small at 80sqm, yet the local families make a small temple large with heart.

We decided to venture 5 hours south of Chennai leaving at 10:00pm for a 5:35am beginning of sunrise at blue hour for one of the most scenic, peaceful visits locations within India, i.e. the Pichavaram Mangrove Forest.

Route Taken Thru the Mangroves by Row Boat
Mangrove Route

First time to see a Mangrove where the Mangrove trees basically suck up the salt in sea water leave on the opposite fresh, dark water.

Inside where only hand-powered boats can go are 4000 wide to narrow canals to transverse.  With low tide coming in at times it was out of the boat to push. A two hour adventure.

Later we headed for the famous Thillai Nataraja Temple in Chidambaram.

August is the start of the Hindu Festival season in South India and increases in frequency for the next few months.  I thought I’d see additional temples for Laki Amman with a focus on “Firewalking”.

September, Ganesha is back – fun time.

August, the month of Adi for the Goddess Laki Amman Festival.  Two particular events that intrigue Westerns like myself are:

  1. Theemithi (fire-walking ritual): This ritual is performed mostly in evenings or nights. Men and women gather in front of an area where burning charcoal is setup on the floor. Devotees walk on this fiery patch to pay for their wrongdoings.
  2. Penance: Self imposed punishment for wrongdoings is also very common among devotees. Carrying fire pots with bare hands, tongue and skin impalement and flagellation are encouraged to get rid of devotees’ guilt.

In this post, I’ve captured the Penance of common people for wrongdoings to remove devotees’ guilt.  In a later post, I’ll share images from the fire-walking ritual.
