Rice Paddies With an IR Faux Color Mix

Thank you for stopping to view my latest post and hope you begin to "Follow" me on my photographic journey of discovery.

Yesterday we headed 2.5 hours north to “Tada Waterfalls” in AP in hope of shooting long exposure photography.

No luck as of course given 42 deg one should know it’s not winter anymore and waterfalls are most likely waterless.  Well, we did have water but it wasn’t falling – see you again in the monsoon season (Nov-Dec).

All was not lost as photographic opportunities often present themselves during the journey and not at the destination.

In my case, it was the 3x per year planting of rice that presented itself.  I took off my shoes and walked in mud calf-deep having the time of my life take photos.  I’m sure the farmers, men harvesting rice seedlings and the women planting the paddies thought these photographers were nuts.

    • Thank CB, Here’s my workflow – wordy as it is long: Hang on, fasten your seatbelt. First out of my Nikon camera I adjust WB with Nikon’s CaptureNX-D placing the eyedropper on a white piece of foliage. Canon / Sony each have their own native RAW processor for a similar WB. Why not LR/PS, the temperature slide won’t go far enough to the LH side. Other IR WB haven’t seemed to work so I came across this approach. Now that the WB is set take the tiff back into LR for your basic adjustements as usual. Now I go into PS for Channel Color Swap, A and B which I have an Action set. Then adjust Hue/Saturation with the Cyan for the sky and the Red for the skin tone. Green has no affect. Yellow has some as does Blue at times. Next, it’s distraction removal time then back to LR. Now over to NIK CEF to set the Lighten/Darken Center and Detailed recipes, then NIK Dfine for noise reduction (could do first. IR images are noise prone as no Green Channel data which is 50% of the 3 colored pixels (R-G-B). Now finish up in NIK Viveza for Control Point local adjustments to taste. Also, I like the “Big Softy” vignette in One1 Photo10 Effects. Done.

      • Thank you, Stuart! I followed your suggestion on regular pictures because I don’t have any infrareds. Nevertheless, I got some interesting results that should be used wisely.
